Beau was your typical extremist growing up, there was no obstacle he couldn't master.  While in his late-teens and engaged to be married to his high school sweetheart, Karen, he along with his cousin, Anton, and high school buddy, Mauricio Becker, agreed to perform a daring undersea act.  Anton was a bit reluctant at first, but after some egging on from Beau and Mauricio, he caved.  It would soon prove that Anton's reluctance was warranted.  During the stunt, a massive current came in and swept Beau's body under.  Despite an exhausting effort to find Beau, he was presumed dead within 48 hours.  Guilt-ridden over not being able to save his cousin, Anton found comfort in Karen's arm.  That comfort soon became physical as they released their emotional energy into one another.   Beau, meanwhile, swept ashore a few miles from the spot where he almost drowned and quickly made his way back home to Karen.  Unfortunately for Beau, he had very bad timing and stumbled onto the scene of his cousin and fiancée making love (or so that's what it looked like through his eyes) to one another.  Furious at the both of them, he disappeared and continued to let them believed that he had perished at sea.

Fast forward to late 2001, Beau became restless and decided to exact his revenge against Anton by sabotaging his relationship with Malina.  However, Mauricio (who Beau brought to town as an obstacle for Malina and Anton) turned out to be a complete flake and used the knowledge of his not so finalized divorce from Malina to maneuver money from her.  As such, Beau opted for option two, illuminating his body so that Anton would believe he was being haunted by his dead cousin.  Of course, Beau tipped his hand when he was caught on camera delivering an anonymous package to Anton.  When the two cousins finally came face to face, Anton was stunned by Beau's full on-rage.  Beau explained to his cousin that he knew Anton had slept with his fiancée, ruining any future that he or Karen could have had.  It didn't warm Anton's heart to know that his cousin saw him with Karen, but it was a moment of grief that brought them together once.  Neither of them would have ever crossed that line had they known he was alive.  Something they could have explained to Beau had he stuck around.  Beau didn't care about Anton's excuses, he was so blinded by his rage that he spent the next several months of his life trying to make Anton's miserable, including letting Anton know that he wasn't Malina's first nor would he have the privilege of being her first husband as that was already given to their old friend, Mauricio.

By early Spring, Malina managed to convince Beau that holding onto his anger over what happened in the past was not healthy.  However, Anton had a hard time swallowing the fact that Beau was ready to make amends and start over.  After some time, Anton was a little more receptive to the idea and decided it was time to tell his brother that their cousin was alive.  Beau, meanwhile, started getting chummy with Leigha Gray (Anton's assistant), which left Anton a little unsettled.  Of course, from what we can see, the relationship is very innocent and Beau has been a good addition to her life.  Beau has also started to get to know his cousin, Dylan.
